How do I hang planters from my specific balcony railing?

How do I hang planters from my specific balcony railing?
I’m trying to get some planters for my apartment balcony, but the railing on it is not standard, so I can’t seem to find any brackets that would work for it.

Basically, the whole balcony is surrounded by a solid wall 5″ wide (with stone texture), and there’s a thick 4″ metal rail above that. Looks like all the round “railing” brackets would be too small for the rail I have, and all the square “deck” brackets have little hooks that are supposed to grip around the wood rail, and they won’t work for me either.

Any ideas how I can hang planters off my balcony railing?

  1. Have you tried hanging baskets? You can screw hooks into the ceiling. Or you could glue or tie your planters on. Thick hemp rope would look nice if you braided it first. You might stick with giant garden pots on the floor. Good luck.

I live in an enclosed area where there isn’t much scope to mount antenna for HD. I heard sometimes back that the railing can be converted into HD antenna.

  15. I currently have the standard (black painted) iron railing. Two of my neighbors have more up-to-date rails, but they had them custom made. I want to be able to just buy it from a store and have them easily installed.

  16. I know how you can hide a whole album from specific people, but how do you hide a specific picture FROM THAT ALBUM from them, as well? Like most pictures from the album can be viewable to everyone, but a few of these from THE SAME ALBUM you want to hide from them. Any ideas? Is it even possible?

  22. I live on the 4th floor of a multi-level apt building and have a balcony which faces a courtyard. There are balconys below me. I have several greece and other stains on my balcony floor, which I guess is some kind of eggshell cement surface. Any suggestions on how to clean up these spots?? Thanks.

  23. My family and I are planning on going on a European cruise next summer on the Carnival Breeze. We have quite a few people so we’re trying to budget as much as possible. Almost all the days are at port so we were wondering if it would be possible to bring lunchboxes and fill them with food from the breakfast buffet in the morning to eat for lunch out a port later in the day. Lot’s of the ports require us to go pretty far from the boat where we can’t just walk back on for lunch.

  54. Ok, I am new to eBay and I just used the Print a Shipping Label option after you have sold an item. After I printed my label, I saw that at the top of the label it said “from 25111″ saying thats where Im shipping it from. But, I am not shipping it from this location, I am on vacation and shipping it from another zip code. I have already paid for all the shipping cost, will the post office still let me ship the item from the local post office?

The railing is very spaced and offers no privacy and I am interested in using bamboo to fill in the space between the railing but would also like some sort of lightweight straw matting that can be attached up top and hang down when I would like more added privacy. Is anyone familiar with such a product and the best place I can purchase it? I live in the Bay Area, California.

  63. Hi,
I live on the 1st floor in an apartment and have a 2 yr old female ragdoll cat. I am worried about letting her out onto the balcony incase she jumps off. She doesn’t seem very curious or adventurous and has a quiet nature. The balcony railing is wide gaps so I am alittle worried. Can she be taught to not go outside on the balcony? She is a totally indoor pet.

Apart from cat wiring etc … and other suggestions?

The balcony is inside the townhouse – this isn’t like a porch or patio. Obviously, because this balcony is inside, this isn’t a matter of keeping the cats from going outside. So, what to do? Have any of you seem something like a balcony/railing kitty guard? I’ve searched, but have only seen things built for high-rise patios. My balcony is an open slot railing so my cats have already taken it upon themselves to walk on the outside ledge of it. I’m worried about them falling because the first floor is entirely concrete – no carpet.
I am not looking for a water bottle solution. I’m looking for a permanent way to prevent them from ever getting out on to the outer ledge. I don’t want them out there ever. I think I may have found a solution that’s designed for crawling babies and banisters. Yes, cats jump from high places all the time, but after researching this, you’d be surprised how many people have lost their pets because they deliberately jumped off a balcony or through a patio railing. Some people said they let their cats out on the balcony for years and nothing ever happened until one day the cat, for whatever reason, decided to jump off it. Most of these stories are from folks that live in high-rise apartments, but some of them also come from people who live in second floor apartments. Sad times :(

I do agree with Ellie that this is a safety issue. My

  72. We live in a second floor apartment and the bird feeder hangs off our balcony railing, so it’s hard for us to prevent them from climbing. They scare the birds away and are breaking my birdfeeders. Any help would be appreciated.

  73. I want a small balcony next to my window so I can hang out there during the day, but if I were to put a balcony there, the patio roof would be in the way. I don’t want the balcony to take up the whole roof, just a quarter of it. How much would it cost to build a balcony + railing? And would it cost extra to take a quarter of the patio roof away? Would you say around $10 – 20,000 to build?

The new HD dish is almost twice the size and weight and will not stay connected to the rail my current dish is on and is limited in it’s direction, meaning facing the satellites(direct tv technisions words). 88. I’d like to populate my balcony with plants that can handle the blistering setting Texas sun. Some of which I would like to block the sun by hanging them, but I’m open to non-hanging plants too. I also need ones that I can get going quickly, because Summer will be here soon. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

P.S. The balcony railing is about mid-waist height, so no light gets through at that level. It’s about 3-4 hours of direct intense sunlight in the summer above the balcony railing.

The roof is leaking in one corner and the railing is pretty rotten. I would like to do the work myself if possible, but not sure what would work best. I would like to go as cheap as possible but still have a decent walk out roof, and I’m not sure how to attach the new railing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You.

I did think privacy screen but they don’t come up in search when looking at stores.

  94. I want to put a flowering vine plant on my balcony and use the railing as a trellis. Something with big colorful blossoms. My apt faces east so it would only get sun till about 1 at the latest. (need to be a partial sun plant) What would you suggest i put out? Im on the third floor so the plant would have to be potted. Thanks!

  97. I live in an apartment and I’d love to grow something I can harvest in the fall. What would grow well in this climate off a balcony railing?

  98. Hi,
I live on the 1st floor in an apartment and have a 2 yr old female ragdoll cat.

  99. I have a balcony with a wooden railing. There’s been a wasp sitting on the side of it for at least three days. He’s breathing, and he flaps his wings every now and then. But he’s only moved at most three inches since day one. He is not at all hostile as well.

I’m really just wondering if this is some sort of strange wasp behavior. You know, kind of like how cicadas grip onto wood and molt. Any insect experts know what’s up?

  101. I am getting married in April and sunset will be around 7:30 p.m.. The wedding ceremony will start at 7 p.m. and weather permitting it will take outside on a balcony that over looks some hills and trees. I need decoration/lighting ideas. I was thinking a lighted wedding arch and then stringing lights on the balcony rail. Good idea/bad idea? Do you have any ideas?
Oh and it needs to be relatively inexpensive.

  102. I wanted to plant some flowers on her balcony in a box that would attach to her railing. I got her 6 inch ones since those are the widest I could find, but they didn’t fit. Apparently her railing is more like 8 inches. I haven’t been able to find any flower boxes that would go over that size railing and I’m not handy enough to be able to make them.

Does anyone out in Y/A land know of a larger size flower box and where can I get them?

  103. Hi my family moved into an apartment a week ago and noticed that everyday brids (i think pigeons) come on our balcony and leave a dirty white mess…

Any suggestions on how to repel them would be useful

  105. In Seattle there are pretty strict balcony railing restrictions in order to obtain a building permit; about height and width etc. I live in a very old house so obviously the permits were already obtained long ago but the restrictions have changed since and the railing no longer meets regulation. Are there any legal ramifications to using the balcony anyways? Or if the house is rented out, does that add any legal ramifications outside of the obvious liability? (the dilemma being I’m currently renting a house where the owners have asked us not to use the balcony because it doesn’t meet current restrictions… but I’m wondering if we sign something to absolve them of all liabilities regarding our safety in using the balcony if that will be enough for us to be able to use it, or if there is something more complicated going on that I’m not aware of)

  106. In my dream i had just moved in to a new apartment. I was looking out of the window and there were some neighbours out on the balcony having a good time. A child had been propped to sit on the balcony railing but was fully held by the mother. She turned to tend a younger child who walked up to her and as she did the other child fell off the railing to her death. Can any one interpret this dream please?

  107. I live in a corner unit in my apartment and need some suggestions for what I can do to keep wind and rain to a minimum. I’ve thought of plastic shower curtains but that will probably look tacky. The railing has rounded edges which would make it hard to attach anything to, but it is a solid plastic piece so no rain can get through there just over the top. I need to be able to use my patio throughout the winter ( not concerned with it being warm just want to keep the elements at bay.)

  108. We just moved from a house that we shared with another family into an apartment and we don’t have any of our own outdoor decoration. I want to use white lights on the railing but I also want something tasteful to make it stand out. My mom says that she’ll pay for anything as long as it is under $100.00 and she likes it too. My sister isn’t really all that interested.
    I wasn’t. I’m just asking.

  109. I keep getting cockatoos and other birds landing on my balcony railings and making a mess. They are also digging around in the soil of my potted plants and driving me insane!

  110. For my wedding I want to make a 2meter long banner to hang of an outdoor balcony with our names on. I though writing in re tissue paper would have a good effect, but on what surface suitable for sticking tissue paper on, outdoor use and how would i hang it off the balcony. Where can i get all the things from?

  111. I have a very active, jumpy 2 year old daughter and because I live on the 9th floor of an apartment building, I wanted to double-check the safety of these side railings that are made of rot-iron. The main part of the balcony which is the front, is all concrete, which I’m not concerned about but the two sides I’m afraid that I can’t leave her grabbing them and looking down all the time when she gets some time on the balcony. So my question was what can I do to ensure her safety apart from not keeping any chairs or objects she can climb on.

  112. So I’m a curious person and earlier I was outside and saw a fly land on my balcony railing not too far from where I was sitting and I kinda just stared at it and it kept cleaning and licking it’s hands. Why do they do this?

  113. Has anyone used Chickenwire to enclose their balcony? How do you attach it to the walls? Cement glue… Staples… Anyone?
Thank you very much for all the ideas… it is a metal balcony with a cement ceiling. and isnt there some sort of galvanized chicken wire that doesnt rust??

  114. My balcony faces South, doesn’t get direct sunlight but the sun does hit it for most of the day. I would like bright colors and fresh smells to make it more inviting. I don’t want a vegetable garden. Also, tips on how to hang boxes so they aren’t just on the ground would be helpful as well!

  115. I want to hang a herb pot that is rectangle that can hold maybe 4 or so herbs in it on my balcony. Any suggestions where to by one or how to secure one?

I went to walmart and picked a metal one (looks great) but you have to screw it in and it is not made to fit a balcony at all.

    Thanks.
How can I hang a plant/herb pot on my balcony?

  121. I live on the water (waterfront) and I get heaps of wild birds mainly Indian Minar & Pee wee wild birds pooing all over my balcony and stairs, railing everywhere, how do I stop this??

  123. In the balcony there are alot of pegions who sleep there at night and keep coming during the day. Its filled with poop. Any ways to keem them out besides driving them away with a stick?

  124. I really want to decorate our balcony with lights for christmas but i live in an apartment so i would think i cant use nails. Do you use suction cups or what? Also i want to hang something on my door but i know i wouldnt be able to use nails for that either. Thanks!

  125. I am planning on putting up gardening mess in 2 layers or a plastic clear chicken wire like stuff I found. Run a base board under to railing and attach it to it and the roof all the way around and run an Ivy through to justify it and add cover plants.

  126. I’m making models of houses in the French Quarter. I’m making them out of wood, but I don’t know what I can use to make iron railings for the balconies. Any suggestions?

if not, please tell me what this one is called then?

  130. Some pigeons keep coming to my balcony, bringing twigs and trying to build a nest. I constantly have to scare them away, wipe out their nest and clean their droppings. However, they always come back. Is there anything I can put on my balcony or otherwise do to scare them away and minimize the chances of them coming back?

  131. I will be booking a cruise with Royal Caribbean, it is the Freedom, we want a balcony room. But why are the prices so different?

I know the prices change by what floor you are on. Some may have obstructed views. But aren’t all balcony rooms the same size? are there some that have more amenities than others (fridge, bigger bathroom, bigger balcony) Or is the difference in price just for the location of your room?

Do you know do the rooms have mini fridges? or is that just the suites?

  132. I bought an investment property in a managed complex. After I bought it, repairs were needed to the balcony. The body corporate manager is saying that I am liable for any repairs to the balcony, because the balcony was added on by a previous owner after the unit was built. Is this correct?

  133. I just moved into a new apartment (upstairs) & my balcony is far from private. It overlooks the parking lot and if the blinds are slid open, people can see straight into my living room. Does anyone have any cute ways of making my apartment balcony more private? I have looked into some ideas, but now I am just looking for some more artistic perspective!! Thanks!

  134. Is it worth for us to pay an extra $200 for a balcony? We don’t really plan on spending much time in the room and will be most likely be spending time out at the pool, jacuzzie, or just outside. Please give you opinion based on your experience. Thank you.

  135. I’m in South Carolina, and there’s a little animal on our balcony. It has a tail sort of like a squirrels, and looks like a squirrel. I’m not sure if it’s a squirrel though, because parts of it are different. Also, it’s very small. I think it’s a baby. It’s also shivering, so I need answers, quick.
It is on out balcony, and I have no idea how it got there because we are on the 8th floor, and there are not many trees around, except palm trees, and the closest one is at least 15 feet away.

  136. Every year I always try to do a few potted plants on my balcony. All my plants are either destroyed by squirrels or birds before they even start. I even tried the red pepper around the plants and that does not seem to deter them.

    Any tips?

  137. I reserved the cheapest balcony cabin on a Royal Caribbean ship. (Category E2) They have upgrades from E1, D3, D2, D1 (D1 being the most expensive.) Am I going to have an obstructed view? Should I upgrade? I can’t figure out why my room was cheaper than the others.

  139. My balcony receives direct sunlight (and gets very hot) during the morning hours and very limited sunlight the rest of the day. What plants would grow best and what advice do you have to take care of them. I have had trouble with many flowering plants because they get so hot in the morning. I live in the midwest so it gets hot in the summers. Thanks!!!

  140. My husband and I are planning a cruise to Mexico soon. Is there a huge difference in having a cabin that has a balcony as opposed to one that is inside? The price seems to be nearly double for one with a balcony… Is it worth the extra money? It is a four day cruise with two port stops. If you have experienced both a balcony and inside stateroom on a cruise, what would you recommend? Thanks!

  141. i usually hang out in the balcony of my house but it’s really hot in there . though there is a blind and i can pull it down but it’s extremely hot . how can i cool it down a bit ?

    Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to water more at the moment – leaves are still dropping though. The bamboo is in a sunny hot place, the pot has lots of drainage. Some new leaves are staying green – but all the old ones are dying.

  144. what supplies should I use for the balcony? where can I buy them?
I got the things to make people but thats about it.
I’m completely clueless as to what else I could use!

  145. Why is the balcony scene is Romeo and Juliet the most popular? There are tons of other love stories that have just as good plots/scenes.
Also, why is the balcony scene so popular? Throughout all of Romeo and Juliet that is the one part that most people know. Why is it more popular than other parts in the play that are just as good?
    Help please?

  146. If a room is too expensive, are there any places that allow you to just stand on their balcony? Is this the best way to see and experience Mardi Gras?

  147. I’m thinking mostly tomatoes and maybe greens. The rail is thick and strong, and there is space for a starter table.
Ok, so far so good on the answers. there is no community nearby. I understand about shade and sunlight. The sun should give lots of lighting for about 4 month at least.
    sorry, i meant community [garden].

  148. What are your suggestions fro creating a garden on a small 2nd floor balcony? How do you put hanging hooks up into a cement balcony celing? What flowers/plants do you suggest?

  149. What is the best way to clean my balcony’s rough cement floor? The drainage is bad, so I cannot use a pressure hose. The surface is rough, so it might wear away the brushes on a machine with brushes. However, I want to clean it with a machine instead of pure manual scrubbing. Are there any good machines for this?

  150. I am about to get a new apartment with a balcony and want to buy a grill. I have neighbors below me and have lots of things in mind. I love to grill chicken breast and healthy food. I am concerned about the safety issues (gas vs. coal), taste of food, price (would like to buy something nice for 2 people below $150), and cleanliness.

  151. When it pees on her balcony it spills onto mine. I talked to her about & she continues to do it. I can’t use my own deck because of the dog pee all over. (Our apartment doesn’t allow dogs so she says it is just visiting.)

  152. I currently clean my balcony twice a month with bleach and a mop but it is getting too much needed to go out and buy a mop head every other week. Would a wet dry vac or anything else work? Please help! Thanks!

  153. I live in an upstairs apartment and need to clean the balcony, but have no access to a hose. ( I originally wanted to pressure wash it.) I’d like to avoid dripping down to my neighbors downstairs as much as possible, but want to get it CLEAN.

  154. It’s on the balcony of a third floor apartment building. I don’t presume someone would steal as the third floor is high, but anything is possible. Should I do it? Or should I leave it out there but cover it? It’s just sitting out there, expensive bike, not locked.

  155. I live on the third floor of an apartment complex and I just got a 1.5 year old husky. I’ve taken her outside many times but she won’t go out on the grass, she’ll go out on the balcony. Now there’s a bunch of poop on my balcony and I don’t know how to get it all off. Any suggestions? It would be really appreciated.

  156. I live in a condo, so the only way to make my own garden is using my balcony, however, i have 2 little rascal cats that i let out there when the weather is nice. Is there a way to avoid them eating the plants? (they really like to do that) I am going to be growing tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers.
Yes, but how to protect the plants? I am new at this stuff! :)

  157. I inherited a couple of propane cylinders for my balcony barbecue, and they are always left outside. Are they safe in direct sunlight (only occasional), and can it get so hot or cold that they need to be moved somewhere else?

  158. I just want to make sure that the balcony rooms are open air. By that, I mean that when you step out to the balcony, you can feel the sea air and look around without glass being in the way, In other words, it is not just a huge window. This may seem like an obvious question, but I want to make sure before I book it.

  159. Hello,

My condo has a 150sqft balcony. Here is a question: How many people can I have on the balcony at once? What is the weight load of the balcony?

    Thanks.
Some people asked for more details. Building is in Miami, Florida. 40 years of age. 8 stories. My condo is on the 6th floor. We had some parties when people would come out for smoke and we would sometimes have 8 people at a time, but I wonder if it’s structurally safe.

    Thanks.
    The floor is concrete slab.

  160. well I am really concerned about global warming and wish I could do something just as an individual to help to have clean air….I have a small balcony…has anyone had any good experience with developing a small garden in a small balcony….how should I start?what kind of pot?what is the most efficient way of having a pot without using too much water and what kind of plant…I love fruit trees…..do you know any plant that can clean air and produce lots of O2 and absorb lots of CO2?

  161. A bamboo palm is pretty good and grows fast but I’d like to know what other plants I can put in large pots on my balcony to give me more privacy. It gets sun directly in the morning and starts to get shady towards the afternoon.
I can’t put up a trellis, unfortunately. It’s against condo association rules.

  162. I know what a balcony is.. When it comes to hotels with it’s own balcony, then what is it called when it is the balcony is shared with other guests that wraps around the building?

  163. I am planning to adopt a cat and allow it to go unto the balcony of a hi-rise. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could enclose the balcony where the cat and I can enjoy the outdoors and the cat can be safe?

  164. balcony railing? They love their balcony and my desk is right next to the patio so I can watch them while I’m working all day. But one jumped up on the railing and just about gave me a heart attack. We’re on the 8th floor. Other than keeping them in, is there something to put along the entire railing so they won’t jump?
Thanks Bobby for the suggestion. I did also think of window seats, but kind of thought that may just be giving them more access or easier access to the railing. My cats are explorers and I’m too scared that they’ll decide to try the railing no matter what. They’re indoor only cats so this is their outside time. I’m afraid they’re just going to have to wait until I can be out there with them to sit on the patio. The tree might be an idea, but again, I’m sure they’d just use it to get to the railing!

  165. My neighor has 2 babies under mother pigeon, they look less than a week old. My neighbor is moving away and i don’t want the next tenant to kill the babies so i volunteered to host them on my balcony, which is right next to hers. I already have one family on mine and i know the father will not appreciate another nest here, but screw him. What can i do to make the transiton smooth?

  166. We’re doing my English coursework essay on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in school right now. And this is the essay title, I have talked about Romeo and Juliet’s characters before and after the balcony scene. I have also talked about how Romeo and Juliet describe each other; the imagery they use and the effectiveness on it. I’ve included quotes and everything.

But I don’t know what to write in conclusion, have I written enough? What else should I talk about? =/

  167. About 6 weeks ago I went out in my balcony and my cat followed me along. I thought it was ok I’m here, started sniffing around the whole balcony discovering new things, new smells. But now he always wants to go to the balcony!! He would scratch the balcony door to get out. We live on the 5th floor too and it’s unsafe! What do I do to make Him more of an indoor cat again? He gets so scared going outside he just like the balcony. What to do?

  168. I live in an apartment, on the second floor with a balcony. I have a 10 year old Calico cat who’s very sweet and loves to sit by the balcony window (what cat wouldn’t?). I thought about letting her onto the balcony, but I’m afraid she might try to catch a bird and fall off the balcony. She’s tried that next to the window sill and hit her head on the window. Yeah, I know. Cats can fall off high places and land on their feet. I just worry about her because she is older and her reflexes aren’t like they used to be. She gets on top of the fridge fine, but she doesn’t jump straight down from there. She gets off and on there from the kitchen counter. So, is it safe to let her onto the balcony unattended or should I just let her out there when I’m around?

  169. Like in the movie Enough, where she kicks him off the balcony, about how long would it take him to reach the ground from a two story building, neglecting air resistance?

  170. I live in a 3rd story apartment and they keep coming up here and crapping all over the balcony and chairs. I have a little girl who loves to play outside on the porch and I can’t keep them off at all hours. She is going to get sick if I can’t scare them away somehow. Thanks.

  171. A pigeon couple made a nest on my balcony during June, and as of June 24th there are two eggs in the nest, Momma bird lets me go really close to her, I watch her every day, and she never leaves the nest. I feel lucky, because I live in a 14 story building, and she picked my balcony out of 159 others. I was wondering if there is a sign, like good fortune, or luck, or something along the lines of that,,, If anyone knows anything I’d greatly appreciate knowing!!! I am excited to watch the babies hatch. They stay in the nest for about 2 months. I am happy to have her there!! :)

  172. I have a small dog, 5 lbs, and live on the top floor of an apartment building. I would like to create a faux yard for my balcony. A small plot of sod for her to use. Any suggestions on where to start?

  173. So I’m writing a book and the main character’s family maintains a lighthouse. I was wondering about the anatomical structure of it as far as how would one enter the balcony of a lighthouse after climbing up the stairs of the inside of the tower? Would she enter the lantern room from the service room and then proceed to enter the balcony outside through a separate door of the lantern room?

  174. I was just wondering if the balcony in the fillmore theatre (formerly state theatre) is too far from the stage. Is it so difficult to see the band that we’ll be too busy squinting? Thanks!

  175. Me, my husband, and my daughter live in a second story apartment with a balcony around 5×7, we want to make a small garden mostly herbs, but we want more veggies and fruits (if possible) that are easy to maintain. Any ideas what else we can grow? And also any ideas on how to make a compact garden?
I tried looking online but they all recommend books that my city library does not carry.
    We live in northern Indiana

  176. I was just wondering how to pull that off. I want to grow things on my balcony but I’m worried my plants wont get pollinated. Is there a way to pollinate them myself?

  177. I have a small balcony measuring B x 2.5 ft and L x 7 ft. I want to grow small edible herbs or flowers but the problem is i live in Delhi, India and the weather is HOT and HUMID though its monsoon season, its pretty sunny in the balcony 75- 80% of the day. Can anyone help me with the perfect herb or plant? My first option is Coriander. I want more suggestions for the plants which should be easily available.

  178. I live in an apartment, so I don’t have a yard to make a garden in, but I would like to plan I balcony garden to plant next spring. I figure if I get a head start on planning now, I’ll feel more confident.

I’m most worried about the amount of sunlight it gets. Only the outer bit gets any direct sunlight and this is only in the evenings. It’s very shady, so I want plants that will hopefully flourish despite this problem.

I really don’t know anything about this, which is why I’m trying to begin planning now. I’m really looking for plants that could flourish in the environment as a pushing off point for learning. Thanks for any feedback!

  179. My landlord is insisting that the reason for my Roach problem is because I put garbage on my balcony. In all honesty I do because we do not have a garbage shoot and I’m 8 months pregnant so lifting heavy bags to go outside every minute is a pain. Now when I do rest a bag on my balcony it’s only for a night then the next morning I through it out. Sometimes I may forget to get it in the morning so sometimes ill have a few bags on my balcony for 2 days tops. Now regarding my apartment, I keep my place very clean compared to most people in my building if any mess is made it is done by my daughter who is 5. She will sometimes leave snack crumbs or wrappers laying around or spill juice but of course when I get to it, it is cleaned up. Also ill admit on a lazy day ill leave a few like 5 dirty dishes in my sink over night then in the morning I would wash them. Basically over all I keep my place clean. In fact when I confronted the property manger about the Roach problem and she told me 8 apartment in the building where the cause of the roaches and that each of them would be served with notices to clean up their place or a eviction would be coming their way. I was not one of those 8 people. Anyhow my reaserch indicates that the cause of roaches are dirty dishes, standing water or a leaky faucet, piling of garbage being kept indoors and just not keeping your place clean overall. So the reason why I think I have roaches is because of my dirty neighbors and trust me I’ve been inside their homes and they don’t keep their place clean. Also I believe the cause is the fact that the property is not taking control of the problem because they just don’t care. I was told by the landlord that if I continue to put garbage on my balcony they will bill me for pest control. Can they do this? Am I really liable? And btw I stoped putting garbage on my balcony just to avoid conflict and I’ve seen many other teanats balconies with garbage bags on their balcony

  180. I’ve read about the dangers and the chances of survival but I want to know at what rate cats fall from balconies. In other words, among cats given access to the balcony how many fall? If it’s 1 in 10 I won’t let him out there but if it’s more like 1 in 500 I’ll let him because he really likes it.

  181. I live on a 3rd floor balcony, stone. This year, all of our basil and rose bushes are being chewed alive as well as a thin tree about 5 years old. before this year it was never a problem. the tree is especially strange because something is eating the bark in large areas right off of it. I have seen a snail or 2 and tonight i think i saw 10 cockroaches. ew.
so my question is are they to blame and where are the cockroaches during the day?? and how do they get on the balcony. so much to learn. thought apt gardening would be easier. thanks!

  182. I just moved into an eighth floor apartment and have two balconies. I first worry as the bars are far apart and then I would like to put some furniture out there as well but worry he might try to jump up on the 1-2″ rail. Any ideas on how we can both enjoy the outdoors? PS, is in Chicago, so the wind is very strong.
I DO NOT want to keep him out there, just enable him to safely come sit outside with the dog and I.
Just want to say Thanks! for all the ideas! No worries on abuse, trust me, all my friends n family want to come back as one of my babies. He is a big fat guy so he rocks a bit when he jumps, lol. He is also a sneaky little bugger! so I want to make sure that if he sneaks out onto it he is safe. Thanks again for everyone’s help!

  183. Hi guys,

I have an outdoor balcony in my condo which is on the tenth floor. Right now the flooring is cement. I would very much like to put some type of stone flooring or large square tile down just to make it look nicer. I wanted to use quartzite but I heard its not recommended.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  184. I saw a picture of a man on a balcony on the “twin towers” right as the plane was hitting. I wasn’t sure if it was photoshopped, and it was “found in the rubble” I was wondering if it even had balconies to prove if it was real or not… Thanks!

  185. I have an old guinea pig cage on my balcony. We put it out there around a month ago, I think, and since we had lots of rain, it filled up with water (Obviously). Since then, I started seeing something grow inside, a few green plant-like colonies (Like you get in ponds). As well as the green stuff, I’ve seen really small tad-pole like animals inside the cage, but they’re all very small, stay still for a few seconds and then swim. The way they swim seems a little odd. They move backwards while frantically waving their tail about and stop moving again.

What do you think I have in the cage? Are they tadpoles? Did they get there from the rain? What about the plant things? Am I God? Did I just create life?

All help is appreciated, thank you! :)
    Dude – I’m a vegetarian ;P

Leanne – You lolled, she gets it guys! :P Amoeba sounds kinda fun. I am planning on taking over the world, maybe it could do my bidding for me!

Ajay – You talk about me not having common sense, yet you seem to think that they evolved from rain O.o I think me being God actually makes a slight amount more sense. I was joking about being God. They wouldn’t evolve from rain but yes, of course it is possible for frog spawn to fall into the cage and hatch into tadpoles. Once in a European country, it rained frogs. Hopefully, it wasn’t France, poor frogs.

PhilinNWfla – The most boring and unthoughtful answer, yet the most accurate. Thank you for answering my question for me, and despite you getting it right, I’m gonna have to go with Leanne for the amusing answer. :)

  186. hi, my brother and I are going to see wicked, is balcony row 3 seats good? would we be able to see, hear, and understand everything good? thanks for answering!

  187. a pigeon has been in my balcony for a while and one day, i heard her in a lot of pain (i supposed she was laying her eggs). well next thing i knows, there are two eggs on a nest in the corner of my balcony. i took a few photos too. how cna i help the mother or should i just let her naturally do whatever. i put some bread on the balcony but if i try and approach her, she flys away. i just leave some bread on the balcony now and when i check on her in the morning, she eats it. also, after the eggs hatch and the ****** know how to fly. will the mother ever return to lay her next eggs? or will she build a new spot. should i get rid of the nest after that? or will that be her home forever. birds dont live with their parents do they?

  188. Wife and I are wanting to stay 1 night at a hotel in the French Quarter. We want to stay in a room with a balcony. I’m looking to spend a max of $300….hoping to be closer to $250ish. I was thinking about going the weekend of Halloween. Would that be fun or just too crazy to enjoy? It would have to be that weekend or the weekend before Halloween. 197. My friend and I have never been to a theater performance, and we’ve recently decided we wanted to watch Wicked at the Orpheum in San Francisco. Of course, we had no clue about the prices…

The cheaper tix cost around 30-50, but pretty much all of them seem to be balcony seating.

Both of us want a really enjoyable experience at the theater. Will we basically be squinting at the stage the entire time and be basically feeling disconnected from the performance?

    Thanks!
Ganal, for example, this is one of the seating results that came up (searching for two seats, $40 ea.) on ticketmaster.com :

    Section: BALC
    Row: A
    Seats: 107 – 105
Description: Stair Access Only to this Section [No Elevator]
    PRICE LEVEL 3
    Balcony [2nd Balcony Level]

    and here’s a result for $30:

    Section: BALC
    Row: B
    Seats: 14 – 16
Description: Stair Access Only to this Section [No Elevator]
    PRICE LEVEL 4

  201. I’m going to be decorating my balcony of my apartment for christmas after Thanksgiving and I wanted some ideas. I got some of that garland with the lights in it to go around the top part of the railing, but I wanted a few more ideas. I want to keep it classy looking, no blow up figurines. Any ideas would be great! Thanks

  202. Hello, I have an indoor balcony overlooking the living room. It is made of wood paneling (no rails) and has a corner. It is about 4 feet high. I have a toddler who is a climber. I am terrified of the thought of a child attempting to get a stool to look over the balcony. Could you please offer suggestions on how to child proof it? Much appreciated. Thank you.
The balcony can’t be locked. It is there as soon as you come down the stairs, and overlooks the living room. I am afraid to put a gate on the stairs to prevent him going down the stairs out of fear that climber boy will climb that too. Climber boy is supervised, but I am afraid of those unguarded moments thath sometimes happen in life and I would like to have peace of mind by having this balcony childproofed.

  205. I have balcony on garage, garage roof was done with wood studs and 3/4 inch plywood, I did mud job on it and plaaning to lay tiles. I want to put Blustrades. I ahve brick walls.
I want to know can I place precast balustrade ? is it too heavy ? if not what I can use ? please advise.

  206. I really want to see two door cinema club but they only have balcony seats left.
Is it going to be horribly filled with boring people sitting down or can you stand and dance around?
also just as an extra question i’m really short and can’t see over peoples heads at concerts usually, is it even better that i got balcony seats?

  207. I read a few things on the web and they all vary. I just want someone else’s opinion.

I dreamt that the balcony in my apartment collapsed. I was very upset at the management of the complex because someone could have gotten hurt. Especially my dog. We decided we couldn’t stay in a place that was so careless so we began looking for a new place to live.

    Any ideas?

  208. Yeah, I’m going in the winter (December) and it will be cold, but my favorite thing to have in any hotel, no matter the weather, is a balcony or terrace with a view. Given the fact that it is cold, maybe a room with a fireplace?

What I don’t want is a bed & breakfast. Nor someplace with a fake stuffy antique feel. What I do want is a true historic antique feel or a very cool modern place.

Not looking for bargains (and am aware that the rooms with the views always cost more), not looking for a spa, do need parking.

    Thoughts?

  209. My balcony on my 2nd floor apartment is very sterdy, My son is almost 2 and I can see him from the window while Im inside.. but I still feel alittle weary about him being out there without me. The railing is about 4 feet tall.. I want to find something maybe like… mesh? or some kinda cover were He wont be able to stick any arms or legs out in between the bars.. Or throw any toys over. What would one of these things be called? Or where would I be able to find one?.. I dont think my apartment would allow any kind of lattice or something non see through
I know whats good for my son I wouldnt ever let him out there without me watching, My apartment setup has Huge windows looking out onto the patio where I will always be able to watch him from the living room. Im not asking for motherly advice… just patio covers :P

  210. looking at booking tickets for theatre at drury lane, london. Tickets available are on the balcony. Row c avaible for £63 for 2 people or row D avaialble for £44 for 2 people.

Never been before – obviously row d is behind row c but can anybody tell me how far from the stage the balcony is and if row c is far enough away from the stage as it is

  211. I am booked On Carnival Glory and am currently booked in a window room, for $300 more, I can upgrade to a balcony room. Should I go for it?

I have been in a window room and liked it, I have never done a balcony room

  212. Hi – I’m going to Disneyland and haven’t been there in almost 3 years. I want a room for my daughter and I that has a balcony with a view of the park. Can you recommend a (relatively) reasonably priced room with a balcony? It must be clean, I don’t care too much about fancy but a balcony would be awesome. We’re both having B-days and can’t wait to go. Thanks!

  213. Hi

I have two rabbits that are well loved and have the life of luxury. Well i think so. They are house rabbits and are very happy. I am moving to a city very soon and have an apartment with a large balcony. Is it selfish of me to bring the rabbits with me and move them to a balcony? They would be in a hutch and be able to be free when i am home. Is there any things i should consider? Would they be shocked in the sudden change?
They are moving onto a balcony as i am moving from a house to a one bedroom apartment.

  214. Hi all! I am trying to create a little garden on my balcony in London as I love plants!…I put a little table there and I would like to put some nice plants on it, any suggestion? possibly something evergreen….but also with flowers :) thank you

  215. I want to let my cat out on the balcony, but I’d feel better if there was some kind of screen up so he can’t jump off. Anyone have ideas or done this before?
I’m the 3rd story up and I’m not scared he’ll “fall” but at the right corner of the balcony, there are outdoor stairs that he can easily jump to the landing and get down. I let him out today and he was happy to be out there but I don’t want him betting down to the ground!

  216. I have a balcony garden, and am growing all edibles. I would some natural and organic solutions to the recent problem of gnats. It might help to know what caused this situation in the first place,(ideas?), and some natural solutions to combat it.

I’m assuming that they are gnats? They look like them anyway. If they are gnats, do they pose a problem to the garden?

    Thanks very much.

  217. I am moving into an apartment that has a rather large balcony and I was wanting to close it off with some type of screen. The don’t care what the balcony looks like just as long as we put no holes in the wall. anyone have any ideas on how to enclose our balcony?
We can’t hang any screens there is no balcony above us and as for asking the hardware store that would be to difficult because we just moved to Italy and don’t speak Italian well yet.

  218. This is a situation I haven’t faced before.

My upstairs neighbors recently got a new puppy. As annoying as it is that this dog barks the entire time they are not home, they are also leaving the puppy unattended from anywhere from ten to thirty minutes on the balcony.

I have never seen them walk this dog, so I am assuming that they are just putting it out on the balcony to do it’s business, which I find totally disgusting.

My question is how to tactfully deal with this? Should I call animal control or the police? Or do you think the apartment office would handle this?

  219. Is it okay for me to leave my dog in the balcony, when we’re not home. I go to school and both my parents work. She’ll stay there for around 6 hours max with food, toys, her dog house/crate, water and doggy pads. I live in Cairo, and its no where near cold, the weather is okay and my balcony is not too small. When I’m home I’ll take her down and walk her and play with her in my room. But just not to cause damage, I want to leave her in the balcony until she’s FULLY trained to not ruin the apartment.
She is small, so she wont jump over the fence. I live on the 1st floor, so no human interaction will be there to steal her or anything. The max time is 6 hours, but for now, I have summer vacation so most of the time I’ll be home, and the max will be 3 hours, where I’m just out at night.

  220. Hope someone with some engineering expertise can answer this one. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment, our balcony is 12 foot by 8 foot, and by the look of it, the concrete slab on the balcony is about 3 inches thick.

Now someone bought a pool that pretty much covers it, at 80% capacity it is estimated at 5500 litres, which I think is WAY too much. So can someone give an estimate on what max stress capacity such a balcony would have.

  221. I am looking for good plants/ flowers to have in pots on my balcony. I live in the DC area so it is cold now (around 55 during the day) but we are having a warm winter. The balcony gets a great deal of sun during the day.

I would like to buy thee or four plants that will nicely fill the space. I am just worried that they will die if gets below freezing. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  222. I just searched cruises on carnival.7 Day cruise. Rates for 4 ppl 2 adults 2chidren is $2581~~ Balcony and $1080~~ for Inside room. I had an oceanview on my honeymoon didnt look out the window that much so I dont wanna pay for that price is $1320. So I know I will either save money and do inside or go out and get the balcony which I think with having 2 small kids would come in handy for me and my husband. But is it worth the cost???

  223. We are booked in an oceanview room on the Norwegian Jewel leaving from NYC April 24. I am wondering how much it would cost to upgrade to a balcony room. I booked through cruise.com and was thinking about contacting them to see the extra cost. Am I better of waiting until the week of the cruise where prices might be lower? Thanks, Kim

  224. So I want to put some plants on my balcony–tall ones to create a little privacy. But plants hate me and tend to die while under my care. What is my best option for an outdoor plant that will flourish year round in the North Carolina climate? If there isn’t one, what plant requires very little attention or can be brought indoors during the cold?

  225. My home is over 100 years old it has a balcony partially built over my living and dining rooms. It leaks A LOT I need to know how to repair or rebuild it. I’m a clueless female on this one. My grandfather tried tar and tar paper and it did nothing. If at all possible keep it inexpensive!! Thanks ahead for any help. (the beams or frame as far as I know do not have wood rot…yet)

  226. Hi.. This will sound impossible, but it did just happened.

I’m renting a new flat (haven’t even been here for 3 weeks yet) and there’s this tiny balcony outside the living room. There’s no door to it, just big window, so maybe I wasn’t even actually allowed to get there, but.. I went there today, and I accidentally pushed the balcony wall down.. I was sitting on the windowsill and rested my feet on the balcony wall (it’s not really tall, just up to the knees) and it just went down..
What do I do now? Do I call the agency or straight away the landlord? What’s going to happen? Is he going to make me move out because of this? I’m really scared and still in shock..
The good thing is that nobody got hurt and I’m very thankful for that..

Please help me.. I’m in panic mode..
Some people came today to investigate it, and apparently it was in a really bad shape that they are saying that a stronger wind or vibration could have done it..

  227. with area 20.0 sq feet is constructed to minimize the amount of railing used. the railing is used on three side

what are dimension of the balcony and the length of railing used?

  228. I have a condo on the second level and I had just gotten a puppy in November. She’s a medium sized dog and my neighbor has a larger more athletic dog. He lets her out on his balcony quite often and she never has been an issue. We have identical balconies with railings fairly high up and they have pretty thin openings. Since it’s getting warm I was wondering if having her out on my balcony would be a problem or if dogs generally just know not to jump.

  229. Great answers, thanks for all your replies. I want my puppy to be able to go out onto the balcony but at the size he is now he could easily fall through the rails. :(

  230. Hey..my apartment complex is offering free rent for the winner of their Christmas balcony decorating complex. Anyone have any great ideas for a 3rd floor balcony? One thing..we arent SUPPOSED to put any holes in anything :)

    Help!!

  231. Someone gave me a cherry tomato plant, and I really really don’t want it to die. The only place I can keep it is on my west-facing apartment balcony. Plants don’t do well in this spot, maybe the sun is too intense? But they always go yellow and die no matter how much I water I pour in the soil when I get home from work late at night.

I was thinking maybe I can get some sort of fabric or something and fasten it to the balcony railing in front of the plant, to cut the edge off of the sunlight? Or am I way off? Should I maybe get a tent or something to have like a little greenhouse for it?

Please I need all the advice I can get.

  232. Stadium Balcony Railing Height Requirements!?!? I’m working on something for my Law class and I need to know what the height of the railings should be at Balcony seats of a stadium.

So for example, at Madison Square Gardens or Air Canada Centre there is a rock concert. At this rock concert there are seats up at balconies if you will, that are otherwise known as an upper level I guess. Usually at the front of these seats there is some sort of railing that is intended to stop anyone from falling over.

I need to figure out what the minimum height of this rail could be.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated! Thank you!

P.S. If possible, the Canadian requirement would be better because I live in Canada, Thanks again.

  233. It is a long shared balcony of an apartment building and it has chips of paint like water damage that I would like to prep before I prime and paint it…The structure itself has steel or wrought iron railings and I also need to paint that…..any and all suggestions would be appreciated….Thank you

  234. I live in the city and we have a huge Pigeon problem. I tried shooing them away every time I see them hoping they’d learn to keep away but it’s not working. I really want to create a sitting area out there, but it’s hard when I am constantly sweeping feathers and poop up. I’m at my witts end. Any suggestions??

  235. My husband and I are moving to a new apartment complex. This new apartment is very nice, and it has a balcony that’s fairly large (we’re on the second floor). I was thinking that it would be nice if I could keep the litter/food on the balcony and get a sliding glass door insert for a pet door, so our cats could get fresh air without wandering off and the litterbox won’t be in the house any more.

However, I was trying to come up with ways to make sure my little adventurous cat won’t jump up on the balcony railing. I’ve read that you can put up a transparent mesh to keep them from it…? Any experiences with this/any ideas?

  236. I don’t really see a hazard with this, it’s not like you’re going to roll overboard.

it might be a bit uncomfortable to sleep on wood unless you plan to drag you mattress out there but Can you really spend the night on your stateroom balcony?

  237. A fireman is running to get a net under a lady who looks like she might jump off the balcony of her 20 story apartment building. There is nothing below her except a 20 story fall. The fireman is still 100 yards away when she falls and can’t nearly get there in time. The woman is not hurt more than a bruise. How is that possible?

  238. I live on 15th floor on a condo w/ balcony where has piegons nesting and flying here for rest,**** and ****……messy !
I cleaned up the nest and wash up a few times and guard the rails with pointers but they simply fly over and come in and still the mess…….how do i get rid of them with minimal force and money?

  239. I’ve had binos for a while, and am now ready to move up to a “big boy” telescope. I am considering either a an apo refractor in the four to six inch range with a computerized mount, or the Celestron CPC series. I know the CPC should technically trump the apo on everything, but I keep hearing people say “my five inch apo gave me the best view of M33 I ever had” etc. Also, I won’t have to bother with dew heaters and cooldown time as much on the apo, but the CPC has the aperture advantage. I only intend to do visual right now. Which would you choose and why? (If you say the apo, please provide specific models under 4k)

    Clear skies.
    @Larry G

Thanks for responding, but unfortunately I cannot get a dob due to the height of my balcony railing. :(

  240. I’ve always wondered since I think the balcony railing is metal???
umm..no I don’t stand on my balcony during a storm..that wwould be dumb, right.??

Artoro..I’m on the 13th floor, my building goes up to 16. I just wanted to kno if it’s a bad idea to go on the balcony at all. Also my sister smokes, so I assume it’s a bad idea to go out and have a cig…thanks 4 the answers though…
that was very insightful Paul..great answer…and lol @ you all watching the lightning “dance”

  241. She’s part Siamese so she loves to be up high. Her litter box is outside which makes it easier on everyone (I live with my bf’s parents) and she loves being on the balcony but she gets up on the railing…we’re nineteen stories up. And she’s been known to lose her balance on the kichen counter. I can’t completely keep her off the balcony cus my father in law smokes and is out there constantly. I don’t know what to do…no one else in the house cares enough to watch her and I’m not around all the time…

  242. i want to keep them away from my balcony.i can’t enjoy sitting there because they poop all over the place and im’ tired of cleaning it everyday.how do i get rid of them and not for this dirty birds to come back.please somebody give me any idea how to keep them away.i tried putting up plastic owl or plastic bags so it will make noise.it doesn’t work.there a pain in the ***!i appreciate your ideas.thanks.

  243. I am the perpetual renter and probably will be for the rest of my life i’m certain. Once again on the move, my new condo boasts a large balcony and each of the two bedrooms opens to the balcony which is really nice. I’d like to create a cozy outdoor space with plants, maybe a hammock, perhaps a patio garden? Any suggestions? THANK YOU!

  244. I was just wondering how you make those cool balcony things in your apartment. It is on all of the pictures and stuff online. Does anyone know?

I was also wondering if anyone knew the cheat that allows you to make your walls go down hills and stuff. That would be handy.
    thanks
