Mantis Tillers
Small engine tune-ups are very good for the performance of the machine. Mantis tillers are no exception. Mantis tillers are available with 2-cycle or 4-cycle engines, and mantis assembles tune-up kits for both engine styles. The easiest way to find these tune-up kits is through the online store. The kits include everything you need to complete a full tune-up on your tiller. A project like this will not take you very long to complete as tune-ups take little time. Soon you will have a tiller that is running well and ready to break more ground.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You’ll Need
- New air filter
- Combination wrench
- Gapping tool
- New spark plug
- Transmission grease
- Gear box gasket
- Tine pins
- Fresh fuel
- Fuel stabilizer
- 2-cycle engine oil (for 2-cycle engines)
1)Remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the wing nut that secures the air filter cover to the engine. Pull the cover away from the engine and remove the air filter pad. Put a new air filter in its place after looking over the air filter cover and removing dirt, debris and other foreign material from the cover. Slide the cover back into place, and replace the wing nut.
2)Disconnect the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug with a combination wrench, and pull the old spark plug away from the engine. Check the gap between the electrodes on the new spark plug with a gapping tool, and insert the new spark plug into the engine. Hand screw it into the engine until it is hand tight. Fully tighten the new spark plug with the combination wrench.
3)Remove the tines from the gear box. Open the gear box by removing the gear box cover. Remove the old gear box gasket. Top the grease level in the gear box off with a tube of transmission grease. Place a new gear box gasket in the place of the old gasket, and reinstall the gear box cover. When reinstalling the tines, replace the old tine pins with a new set of tine pins.
4)Mix a fresh gallon of gasoline with fuel stabilizer. Add 2-cycle oil for 2-cycle engines. Swirl the gas can to mix the stabilizer and oil into the fuel well. Fill the fuel tank with the fresh fuel mixture.
Tips & Warnings
As an option, the tune-up may include replacing the tine assembly. A whole new tine assembly will make a huge difference in the performance of the tiller. The easiest way to tell if the tine assembly needs to be replaced is to look at the condition of the current set of tines. If most of the tine tips are rounded off and blunted, it is time to replace them. If the tips are bent over but in otherwise good condition, straighten the tips with a pair of pliers.

Hi, I am considering the above unit for use around the garden. Mostly to edge lawns, keep weeds down and some cultivating. Do you, or any one you know, have any experience with this brand? Do you know any for sale? Thanks in anticipation. David

Thanks for any info.
Also, has anyone ever used an electric tiller? ( this is new on me)
I am changing the spark plug in my CR250 and when i pulled the boot off of the old plug, the terminal cap stayed in the boot so that the terminal end of the spark plug just looks like a screw with threads and all. I’ve tried using needle nose pliers but I don’t want to mess up the boot. Any suggestions?
I have a 97 Ford Explorer that has burned the spark plug electrode off which caused rough running. Now it is running the same as before. No power and wants to die. Plug was passenger side rear plug. Will be checking plugs again soon. Any ideas?

I have an allotment which I am looking to get a mini tiller for. I have a large 5hp merry tiller that was used to break up the compacted earth and now I am selling that to get a mini one. However I can decide on the best one to get and whether 2-stroke/4-stroke is best. Mantis seem to be the market leader and priciest but I also see Honda and a few others about, even ryobi have a strimmer with tiller attachment. So any recommendations welcome
Like for a butterfly it has 4 stages. A frog is 4 stages for it to become a frog; Does anyone know any animals that contain 6 stages please and thank you.
I am looking in to buying a tiller for a small garden I have.
But there are many different brands of tillers, and I’m not experienced in exactly what makes a tiller good, so I’m looking for suggestions.
If not, I’d love to see an example of another.
Thanks nicospiritfire! I don’t know if it’s fire, exactly, but it’s VERY COOL info. to have.
*neco (sorry)
How great is your tiller choice?
How light is your tiller choice?
Are the tillers lightweight for example a Mantis or liars?
my grandpa is looking to buy a light weight gas powered
garden tiller for his small garden. he hired someone to break the grass sod last year so now he needs to get something
to maintain the garden
Sorry but I know nothing. Does the engine housing have to come off? The handle seems to be in the way, so surely this doesn’t mean the whole machine has to be dis-assembled? Thanks for any help. It must be simple, but instructions just say, take it out and clean.

I run a large community garden. I am thinking of getting a mantis and wondered if any one had one and what your thoughts were on it. The soil is pretty loose now as it is so we won’t have a problem there. But I also wanna use it in some old flower beds and plant some grass. How deep does it actually till? And what’s the difference between the 2 cycle and the 4 cycle?
Thanks!

I just noticed a buck knife i was looking at, its called that mantis, is made in china. Also the kershaw vapor 2 i noticed is made in china. Does that mean those knives aren’t good quality because i heard most Chinese made knives are crappy
so what im asking is are the knives i was looking at any good even though they were made in china?

I’m looking for a small rototiller to help me keep up with the garden during the summer months. I’d like it to be easy to start. Any suggestions?
I have had a 4 Stroke Mantis tiller this past three or four years and until now it has given no bother at all. It is now beginning to cut out at start up. Here is what happens.
Press the little bubble 20 or so times. Put choke on, pull cord and the engine will turn. Move it from there down to power and within 3-4 seconds the engine cuts out. With the trigger been pulled and the choke open the engine will run for about three or four minutes and then cuts out. After two or three or four times attempting to start the engine it becomes much harder.
Have checked oil, it seems OK. Have removed filter, again it seems OK, there is no sign of petrol or oil in the filter.
Have checked all the usual for obstructions etc., but there doesn’t seem to be anything the matter there.
So any ideas of what I might try. The lawn needs some serious scarifying.
MalkyMalky wrote ‘Add an eggcup-full of B12′ How often: every time you fill up, once a season, or a one off. Sorry if that sounds a silly question
I bought what looks like a good used Mantis tiller. However, I need to know what degree the angle on the tines are supposed to be. Looking at pictures it looks like 45 degrees. Please advise if you will. Thank you in advance.
A rather simple question. If you are standing in front of the Mantis Tiller and looking at the logo ‘Mantis,’ for the connecting of tines, scarafier, etc. which is regarded as left, the side nearest the ‘M’ or the side nearest the ‘s’.
Many thanks
Thanks Reynwate for your answer.
It’s really the detatcher set I was thinking about. There is one marked for the right side of the machine and one marked for the left side of the machine and I’m not to sure which side Mantis regard as left or right.
From your answer I take it that if you are standing facing the Mantis then left is the side nearest the letter ‘s’ in the ‘Mantis’ logo written across the front.
That been the case then I assume when reading the instruction one should assume that you are standing behind the machine when Mantis speak of Right or Left.
They look very small for heavy soil like mine, but would be just the thing for an old codger like me. If they really do what is claimed.

I just bought my first home, and one of my projects will be to fix my lawn. It’s just not been cared for much by the previous owners. There is grass, but its not full and healthy. Also, the lawn is a bit spotty. According to my neighbors, we have a problem with sand, and grubs. I live in Michigan. thanks!
I’ve search high up and low down for a 10W 30 four cycle oil for my Mantis Tiller, and can’t find one.
Is this an American standard oil and is it available in the UK?
What might I substitute in its place; a local dealer has suggested a 20 40 synthetic – but I think he is just trying to make a sale.
Many thanks
Could I get away with only tilling my backyard once a year? I don’t plan on doing any serious work on it – just tilling it so I can plant some nice garden vegetables and a few perennial flowers.
how do the different kind of tines work?
I purchased a Earthquake MC43 Mini-Cultivator worked great for the first hour then the tines stopped spinning. Called Sears and they are taking it back and sending me a refund. I need a new one and i need to keep it between $200-350.00……Any Idea’s on what is a good reliable brand within this price range?
I’m Staying away from the mini tillers…..the Yard Machines Front Line 139cc Gas Tiller looks like it would work…..and its within my price range anyone ever use it?
