Tune Up Your Mantis Tiller

Mantis Tillers

Small engine tune-ups are very good for the performance of the machine. Mantis tillers are no exception. Mantis tillers are available with 2-cycle or 4-cycle engines, and mantis assembles tune-up kits for both engine styles. The easiest way to find these tune-up kits is through the online store. The kits include everything you need to complete a full tune-up on your tiller. A project like this will not take you very long to complete as tune-ups take little time. Soon you will have a tiller that is running well and ready to break more ground.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You’ll Need

  • New air filter
  • Combination wrench
  • Gapping tool
  • New spark plug
  • Transmission grease
  • Gear box gasket
  • Tine pins
  • Fresh fuel
  • Fuel stabilizer
  • 2-cycle engine oil (for 2-cycle engines)

1)Remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the wing nut that secures the air filter cover to the engine. Pull the cover away from the engine and remove the air filter pad. Put a new air filter in its place after looking over the air filter cover and removing dirt, debris and other foreign material from the cover. Slide the cover back into place, and replace the wing nut.

2)Disconnect the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug with a combination wrench, and pull the old spark plug away from the engine. Check the gap between the electrodes on the new spark plug with a gapping tool, and insert the new spark plug into the engine. Hand screw it into the engine until it is hand tight. Fully tighten the new spark plug with the combination wrench.

Mantis Tillers3)Remove the tines from the gear box. Open the gear box by removing the gear box cover. Remove the old gear box gasket. Top the grease level in the gear box off with a tube of transmission grease. Place a new gear box gasket in the place of the old gasket, and reinstall the gear box cover. When reinstalling the tines, replace the old tine pins with a new set of tine pins.

4)Mix a fresh gallon of gasoline with fuel stabilizer. Add 2-cycle oil for 2-cycle engines. Swirl the gas can to mix the stabilizer and oil into the fuel well. Fill the fuel tank with the fresh fuel mixture.

Tips & Warnings

As an option, the tune-up may include replacing the tine assembly. A whole new tine assembly will make a huge difference in the performance of the tiller. The easiest way to tell if the tine assembly needs to be replaced is to look at the condition of the current set of tines. If most of the tine tips are rounded off and blunted, it is time to replace them. If the tips are bent over but in otherwise good condition, straighten the tips with a pair of pliers.

  4. We are looking to talk to people who own these. We want to purchase one, but at the price around $350, we want to make sure this is a great product.

Are they worth their money? Are they easy to use? would you recommend it to a friend? thanks alot!!

  5. how expensive too btw?

if are wanting to spread topsoil or compost over uneven areas or eroded areas of lawn and till into the existing soil in spots only..not in large areas…is the Mantis Tiller really good for this?

how about tilling up areas of bed areas? and how compared to a regular sized front tiller?
CAN USE THEM ON CLAY GROUND..IF WATER FIRST? AND IF TILLING IN COMPOST OR POTTING SOIL INTO IT?

  6. Hi, I am considering the above unit for use around the garden. Mostly to edge lawns, keep weeds down and some cultivating. Do you, or any one you know, have any experience with this brand? Do you know any for sale? Thanks in anticipation. David

  7. This would be for a child to use in her garden. Well, 12 years old.
    Thanks for any info.

Also, has anyone ever used an electric tiller? ( this is new on me)

  8. I am changing the spark plug in my CR250 and when i pulled the boot off of the old plug, the terminal cap stayed in the boot so that the terminal end of the spark plug just looks like a screw with threads and all. I’ve tried using needle nose pliers but I don’t want to mess up the boot. Any suggestions?

  9. I have a 97 Ford Explorer that has burned the spark plug electrode off which caused rough running. Now it is running the same as before. No power and wants to die. Plug was passenger side rear plug. Will be checking plugs again soon. Any ideas?

  14. I have an allotment which I am looking to get a mini tiller for. I have a large 5hp merry tiller that was used to break up the compacted earth and now I am selling that to get a mini one. However I can decide on the best one to get and whether 2-stroke/4-stroke is best. Mantis seem to be the market leader and priciest but I also see Honda and a few others about, even ryobi have a strimmer with tiller attachment. So any recommendations welcome

But there are many different brands of tillers, and I’m not experienced in exactly what makes a tiller good, so I’m looking for suggestions.

  18. Sorry but I know nothing. Does the engine housing have to come off? The handle seems to be in the way, so surely this doesn’t mean the whole machine has to be dis-assembled? Thanks for any help. It must be simple, but instructions just say, take it out and clean.

  22. I run a large community garden. I am thinking of getting a mantis and wondered if any one had one and what your thoughts were on it. The soil is pretty loose now as it is so we won’t have a problem there. But I also wanna use it in some old flower beds and plant some grass. How deep does it actually till? And what’s the difference between the 2 cycle and the 4 cycle?
    Thanks!

  24. I just noticed a buck knife i was looking at, its called that mantis, is made in china. Also the kershaw vapor 2 i noticed is made in china. Does that mean those knives aren’t good quality because i heard most Chinese made knives are crappy
so what im asking is are the knives i was looking at any good even though they were made in china?

  27. I’m looking for a small rototiller to help me keep up with the garden during the summer months. I’d like it to be easy to start. Any suggestions?

  28. I have had a 4 Stroke Mantis tiller this past three or four years and until now it has given no bother at all. It is now beginning to cut out at start up. Here is what happens.

Press the little bubble 20 or so times. Put choke on, pull cord and the engine will turn. Move it from there down to power and within 3-4 seconds the engine cuts out. With the trigger been pulled and the choke open the engine will run for about three or four minutes and then cuts out. After two or three or four times attempting to start the engine it becomes much harder.

Have checked oil, it seems OK. Have removed filter, again it seems OK, there is no sign of petrol or oil in the filter.

Have checked all the usual for obstructions etc., but there doesn’t seem to be anything the matter there.

So any ideas of what I might try. The lawn needs some serious scarifying.
MalkyMalky wrote ‘Add an eggcup-full of B12′ How often: every time you fill up, once a season, or a one off. Sorry if that sounds a silly question

  29. I bought what looks like a good used Mantis tiller. However, I need to know what degree the angle on the tines are supposed to be. Looking at pictures it looks like 45 degrees. Please advise if you will. Thank you in advance.

  30. A rather simple question. If you are standing in front of the Mantis Tiller and looking at the logo ‘Mantis,’ for the connecting of tines, scarafier, etc. which is regarded as left, the side nearest the ‘M’ or the side nearest the ‘s’.

    Many thanks
    Thanks Reynwate for your answer.

It’s really the detatcher set I was thinking about. There is one marked for the right side of the machine and one marked for the left side of the machine and I’m not to sure which side Mantis regard as left or right.

From your answer I take it that if you are standing facing the Mantis then left is the side nearest the letter ‘s’ in the ‘Mantis’ logo written across the front.

That been the case then I assume when reading the instruction one should assume that you are standing behind the machine when Mantis speak of Right or Left.

  32. I just bought my first home, and one of my projects will be to fix my lawn. It’s just not been cared for much by the previous owners. There is grass, but its not full and healthy. Also, the lawn is a bit spotty. According to my neighbors, we have a problem with sand, and grubs. I live in Michigan. thanks!

  33. I’ve search high up and low down for a 10W 30 four cycle oil for my Mantis Tiller, and can’t find one.

Is this an American standard oil and is it available in the UK?

What might I substitute in its place; a local dealer has suggested a 20 40 synthetic – but I think he is just trying to make a sale.

    Many thanks

  34. Could I get away with only tilling my backyard once a year? I don’t plan on doing any serious work on it – just tilling it so I can plant some nice garden vegetables and a few perennial flowers.

  35. I purchased a Earthquake MC43 Mini-Cultivator worked great for the first hour then the tines stopped spinning. Called Sears and they are taking it back and sending me a refund. I need a new one and i need to keep it between $200-350.00……Any Idea’s on what is a good reliable brand within this price range?
I’m Staying away from the mini tillers…..the Yard Machines Front Line 139cc Gas Tiller looks like it would work…..and its within my price range anyone ever use it?

  36. i have been think about small tiller of some type , i’ve looked at the manis which is $350 dollars. and the ones at go on a weed eater which cost about $89 dollars its not so much the money but which one will do the job, the garden is about a 30 foot square. thanks

  37. I think they are from some old trees that have been take out years ago. Every year I struggle with these little fine roots. I would really like to get rid of them but not damage my soil as I am ready to plat flowers in the beds.

  38. mantis tiller (2-cycle engine), engine starts and runs, tines do not turn.
i have checked to make sure that engine is seated properly on transmission as per mantis manual.
    what next?

  39. i have a 2 stroke snow blower that will not stay running. it will however stay running while pushing the primer button in and out all the time but when i quit pushing the button it dies. it has new gas in the snow blower. please help me figure this any ideas would be great ful

  40. Can someone tell me which is the best small rototiller for work on a backyard? I only have a $400 budget to spend and I have some work that needs done in order to make my backyard workable for flowers and vegetables.

  41. i feel foolish to ask what it does …so i just play it off..lol…
where do i get one of these…can i rent one????how much do they cost?

  42. I have a mantis tiller and have rebuilt the carb and adjusted it and checked the screen on the muffler and checked compression everything appears to be ok but it runs fine it just won’t idle

  43. I got a Mantis two weeks ago and I’m sending it back to the company (Mantis). I ran it once and it was great …when I got it started. Now it won’t start at all. Of course after I got it I found a lot of negative reviews with the same problems I had. Seems the manufacturer the past few years has gotten cheaper.

I called a local place that sells mowers and tillers, and they recommended the Echo but then told me that Mantis makes it, so that’s out.
I’m thinking of a Stihl Yard Boss or a Honda.

Any recommendations? I am looking for small, like the Mantis.
    Thank you.

  44. I recently bought a Mantis tiller with the lawn care kit, dethatcher and aerator, as regards the dethatcher it seems to suggest that when dethatching that you walk bback wayswith the tiller.

What confuses me is that the tines of the detatcher nnaturally move in a forward direction so if you move backwards you are going against the nnatural movement of the machine, I don’t understand why this should be – would it not damage the dethatchers tines? I’m also thinking to myself that by moving against the natural pull of the machine that its going to be quite difficult work – though maybe I’m wrong

Many thanks for any advice offered.

  45. Can you name me the best rated rear-tine tiller? I am researching all my options right now and I have a pretty extensive project in my backyard that needs addressing. I want to get something that will carve through small roots (saplings) as well as tougher top soil that hasn’t been tiller – maybe ever.

  46. Sorry but I know nothing. Does the engine housing have to come off? The handle seems to be in the way, so surely this doesn’t mean the whole machine has to be dis-assembled? Thanks for any help. It must be simple, but instructions just say, take it out and clean.

  47. I’m thinking of getting the 2 cycle tiller for the community garden I run, so wondered if anyone had one and if you liked it. I’ve never seen a bad review other than the problem of large rocks getting stuck in the tines.
    Thanks.

  48. If you have a mantis tiller I could use some help.
First off, I put it together over the weekend and seems like all the vibrating works the screws loose. Even one of the handles came loose. (honestly I had no idea I’d need socket wrenches to put it together. I had to go out and buy a set. What a pain!) Some of the nuts seem to be really hard to get onto the bolts. And I’m not a weakling!

Second, it’s not that easy to start. The first time I flooded it, apparently.
I finally got it started but I’m having a hard time restarting it. Do I need to monkey around with the choke all the time? For example the instructions say pull the choke out and then pump the bulb 6 times and start it. I did that. I ended up calling the company and she said, after you pump the bulb you have to close the choke. Instructions did not say that. It just seems hard to start.
    Thanks for your answers.

  49. It’s a Poulan 16″. What happens is, I’ll start it up and it’ll work for about 1 minute before it stops. I can turn it on after it stops but it will just do the same thing over again. Does anyone know how we can fix it so it runs the full time?

  50. i’m contemplating buying a mini tiller, cultivator for cultivation use, for small domestic plots. would a machine like this break up earth that has not been broken up before ????

  51. I can’t read the model numbers, the rear tines locks up, i can kick them and it starts to work again, i just hate kicking the thing all day.

  52. Want to use human-powered tools to make my garden. Right now i have grass. I want to cultivate it ad some manure and get it garden ready. I’ve seen action hoe’s and twist cultivators. Would they work, any others, thanks.
I have also seen the wheel cultivators, the ones you push, buy most are out of my budget.

  53. I have a 4 stroke Mantis tiller, petrol. The machine’s spark plug, oil and oil filter have recently been cleaned/changed

I’m having trouble, here’s what is happening. I start the engine and with my hand on the trottle let it idle for a few minutes. Eventually I give it full power but it takes a little while to reach working speed.

Here’s my problem. I take my hand off the trottle, say to lift a stone or do something else and within 10-15 seconds the machine cuts out. Now it shouldn’t do that. As far as I know it should idle away for some time as it has in the past.

Anyone give me advice as to what my solution could be.

As always many thanks for your replies.

  54. hi i have had an allotment for a year its about 12 metres by 6 metres and i am wanting a rotovater or a tiller or a cultivator but im not sure which is which or the best 1 to get, The ground is ok not hard or clay but want something decent for the size and tilthing and things but im not spending stupid money on a name i know im asking a lot lol,

  55. Went to start my Mantis this morning, but no fuel is going into the primer bulb. Mantis is closed today, so was wondering if anyone has had this problem. I looked in the fuel tank, and bubbles of air are coming out of the fuel line that goes to the bulb, but no fuel is going into the bulb. HELP!

  56. I’m planting a vegetable garden for the first time, and need to dig through the existing grass.

My original plan for digging out the plot was to just attack it with a good old-fashioned shovel and a rake, but when I tried, the ground was so hard that the shovel couldn’t even split the ground.

So now I’m looking at renting a roto-tiller. When I went to the Home Depot to ask about it, they told me that I would need to rent a rear-tine tiller for the job, a big-wheeled machine so huge that it won’t even fit in the back of my SUV. I’d have to rent a pickup truck too in order to rent that thing, an extra expense that I really don’t want to have to pay just so that I can plant a garden. When I asked about their mid-tine tillers, they said that they would do me no good whatsoever because they don’t work on hard ground.

Advice? Are they right? Do I really need that big honking machine just to dig up my hard ground? Or would one of the mid-tine ones be fine?

Anyone have experience with trying to use a smaller tiller on clay soil where it hasn’t rained in almost 3 weeks?

Perhaps the ground will loosen up enough if I water it for the next few days?

I really need quick advice on this, because I’m really late into the planting season already, and I have seedlings that are bursting out of their seed-starters and need to be planted within the next week.

  57. I recently bought a Mantis 4 cycle tiller, but when I start the machine it smokes quite a bit but when it warms up it seems to run ok, at times it seems a little difficult to start.

My concern is that the tiller is also leaking oil. The oil drips from the right-hand side (standing behind the tiller; the side you pour the petrol/gas in) and falls onto the fender. This seems to happen more when the engine in hot, and I’m not overworking it – say 30-45 minutes at a time.

At first I thought I might have overfilled the machine so I emptied the oil and refilled it – I use the little bottle that came with the Mantis as my guide, just one of those. (I’ve actually done this on two occasions)

The machine works well when started and if I can solve this problem I’ll certainly be keeping the machine and I don’t want to have to return it to Mantis so any suggestions.
It looks very much like I did overfill with oil and that was what was causing the leak. The oil seemed to work its way down into a filter (made of some sort of sponge) and it soaked it up dropping it later in the form of the leak I wrote about.

I took the filter out; gave it a careful wash in lukewarm water with a little washing up liquid added and let it dry on the window. Cleaned out any loose oil in the filter house and then reassembled it.

I’ve taken the tiller and given it a few trial runs this afternoon so far no leaking.

Hopefully that’s got to the bottom of my problem and hopefully I’ll not need to send it back, However, if it doesn’t cure the problem or it gives any more trouble then yes it will be straight back to Mantis.

  58. The tiller will start and idle. But when i pull the throttle it will run for a few seconds and die. I did notice there is some air bubbles in the fuel line.

  59. I can’t decide between which electric tiller to buy for working my veggie garden this spring
    1. Greenworks 8 amp Electric tiller or
    2. Black & Decker 8.3 Electric tiller
If you have any real experience with either of these, I would appreciate some honest feedback.
    Thanks

  60. Looked at one at a pawn shop and the guy said he would sell ot for around 70 bucks, probably around 10 years old, It ran good, SOme wear though.

    will they till soil good?
