One good idea is to go with more of a gardener feel around your deck. You can plant low growing evergreens around the border of your deck. You can mix in small shrubs and bushes around the evergreens. Pick flowers of different colors to intermingle with the shrubs, bushes and evergreens. Make sure that you pick bushes and shrubs that don’t grow to large. The idea of this garden set up is to keep it simple and low-maintenance. The border will look absolutely beautiful when the flowers are in bloom.
The pond is about 15′ by 6′, yet only about 4″ deep (in fact we’ve been dry lately and it’s down to rocks and completely dried out – it’s shallow enough that it does that easily). If I keep it full, I have enough water to run a little bit of a waterfall pump through it, but not much else. I had hoped to have it deepened to be able to get Koi etc., but it seems it’s more expensive to do that now than it would be if we started from scratch. Perhaps we could convert to a fire pit? The pond is right off our wood deck and has a small copse of pines across the other (narrower) side from the deck. Anything creative? It simply has a plastic liner w/River rock, and then it is encircled by basic flagstones.
Looking for creative landscaping ideas – again, I’d love to find an inexpensive way to keep it as a pond, but it can’t really stay the way it is – one solution is to simply fill it in completely…
I know this is difficult without pictures, but just looking for ideas.
FYI – the 4 inches of depth is only at the middle, most of the “pond” is less than an inch or 2 at best and in full sunlight most of the day. Yes, there may also be a liner problem, but evaporation certainly takes it’s toll as well… (I think the home contractor had a good idea, but didn’t implement very well for whatever reason…)
I want to remodel my huge back yard. I want a pool , deck and a pond..i know i can afford it, but i dont know what to place where and what plants to use. My backyard is basically a block of dead land.Only weeds and stickers are alive. What site can i go to so i can get a basic idea of what i can put in it.
We get over a hundred spiders that spin webs all around our yard, in all the bushes, trees, and on our deck furniture. I am looking for ideas on how we can eliminate them. I believe they are garden orb spiders. It makes it impossible to enjoy our yard and deck all summer. They don’t come into the house so that is not a problem, just the outside.

I have a nice large backyard which is in a wonderful location- except there is one neighbor, their house is right next to my fence. It is an eyesore of a building for one, and there is a second story window that overlooks my entire yard. Last spring & summer I invested a lot in landscaping my yard, put in sod, a pond, and created a nice escape. The issue that I have is the teenager that lives next door is extremely nosy, like to sit in the sit on the window and just stare, listen to conversations, etc. I got so frustrated that I put up some lattice and netting to grow vines for privacy, but they have yet to fill in. I also bought a large market umbrella but it is not tall enough to block that window. Any advice? It is so frustrating!
I have most equipment for lawn maintence I just need to buy a trailer to lug it all around. Planning on doing it with a freind and providing a variety of services like building firepits, patios, decks, mulching, powerwashing and all lawn care. Has anyone had any experiance with this or tried it before im trying to figure out if its worth inviesting in a trailer and whatever else I might have to invest in.
About 10 of us traveling to Orange Beach Thanksgiving week, several young children in the group, looking for fun family type activities to do besides the beach. thanks
