March Madness is the excitement involved in the final few weeks of the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament in the United States of America that features a number of major schools. It is tagged as March Madness because of the many games happening in throughout the country, usually going on simultaneously, in rapid succession during the month of March. Teams go through a single elimination tournament, so a loss means the end of the season for them.
The post season tournament exudes a much different atmosphere than that of NCAA football, where only two teams have a chance to win the national championship at the end of the regular season. In March Madness, there are 64 teams altogether competing for the national title. If are teams on a hot streak, there certainly are teams also getting cold. Anything can happen. Therefore, March Madness generates a certain kind of buzz because of the amount of uncertainty between all the teams competing.
The collegiate basketball tournament goes on all over the country in various graphical regions. It is possible for schools to be assigned to their home graphical region depending on how the draw is done. Generally, the number one seeds in each quarter of the draw are tasked to play their opening games near their home region, but nothing is certain.
What’s more, conference tournaments take place just before the NCAA basketball tournament. This gives teams that don’t make the 64-team field one more chance before the tournament begins, further fanning the flame of the excitement that is March Madness. Teams winning their conference tourneys automatically get in the tournament despite what their regular season records might have been.
Also adding to the madness is the fact that every year, a team comes out of nowhere to make a run deep into the tourney. They are often called a “Cinderella” team because they surprise every collegiate basketball fan. While these teams almost never win, they make memorable moments in the tournament, therefore adding to the excitement of March Madness.
Aside from the term March Madness, the rounds leading to the championship have different names. The third round, in which there are 16 teams left, is called the Sweet 16. The next round is referred to as the Elite 8. Then, there is the Final 4.
In the Final 4, two games are played in a span of three days to decide who will be the national champion and close out March Madness. As with any sports victory, the madness continues with a campus victory party celebrated in the winning college town.
